In the Spring of 2005, Fall Out Boy, a little-known band from Wilmette, Illinois dropped their second record, From Under the Cork Tree, and have enjoyed non-stop success ever since.
It is hard to believe that a band whose single "Sugar We’re Going Down," the number one most-requested song on Z100 (NYC most listened to radio station) this summer, didn’t even have a name prior to their second show. When the guys asked the crowd what they should be called, a fan screamed out “Fall Out Boy!”
The four band members, vocalist/guitarist Patrick Stump, bassist Peter Wentz, drummer Andrew Hurley, and guitarist Joseph Trohman, put together a three song demo, and sent it out to a ton of labels. The band settled with the label Fueled by Ramen, which is co-owned by the drummer from the band Less Than Jake. With the help of an advance from record label Island Records and guidance from Lucky Boys Confusion and Motion City Soundtrack’s Sean O’Keefe, they were able to record their debut album, Take This to Your Grave, in 2003. The advance from Island Records had no strings attached.
After Take This to Your Grave was released, Island offered the band a contract.
Two years later, Island was glad they took the chance on the four guys from the Chicago underground music scene. When their second album hit gold, the band became a permanent fixture on FuseTV, won the MTV two music award at 2005’ s VMA awards, and headlined Vans 2005 Warped Tour along with longtime fan favorite, The Offspring.
Since Fall Out Boy has become so popular, their loyal fan base, which was once solely punk rock fans from the Chicago music scene, has definitely shifted. Fans that have been with them from the start are now joined by girls screaming Fall Out Boy at the concerts. With their catchy lyrics and sounds, it’s not hard to see why Fall Out Boy is getting the attention and popularity they definitely deserve.
