Tryouts have you nervous? Don’t know if you have the skills?

Author: Alexandra Santiago

As the new school year begins, so do the fall sports. These include sports ranging anywhere from girls’ and boys bowlng, girls’ swimming, girls’ and boys’ cross country, boys’ soccer, boys’ varsity and junior varsity football, girls’ varsity and junior varsity volleyball and to girls’ golf. If any of these sports sound interesting to you, this is the time to do something about it.

Once you pick the sport you want to join, you need to find out when and where the tryouts are held. For example, girls’ and boys’ bowling teams started the week of September 12th. There are tryouts for boys’ bowling, but not for girls- you just come and if you decide you can commit to the team, you’re on it. There have also been cross country tryouts going on during the first week back. Volleyball is also in the process of getting its roster together.

Now that you have chosen the sport you want to participate in, and how tryouts work, there are a few necessities you need in order to even show up and tryout. You need to show up with a feeling of confidence and determination. The most important two documents you need are a completed, recent physical, and a signed permission slip. Also, for most sports, you need to maintain at least an 85% average or better to remain on the team.

Now that you know everything you need to know about trying out for the sport of your choice, all that’s left for you to do is tryout. If you’re afraid, here are some of words from fellow Warriors who tried out for the girls’ swim team this year. “I felt really weird because the day I tried out, I was the only freshman in the pool,” said Mairin O’Connor. “I was really excited and I knew swimming was going to be a lot of work. The girls on the team are really great,” is Jessica Lee’s fervent opinion.

Remember this: if you don’t make the team this year, don’t give up. Don’t get down on yourself. It doesn’t mean you’re not talented enough. You can try again, or tryout for one of the many other sports offered at Curtis. If no other sports interest you, we have a variety of clubs available; there will be one that interests you (If not, you can see Joe Sicilian and start your own). Just give it your all, and be sure to always represent the warrior spirit as best you can.
